"Gathering Herbs in the Wild"
First, please never gather or collect from the wild unless you are a skilled herbalist. There are many dangerously poison plants that resemble healthful herbs. You must know what you are gathering is safe for consumption.
Secondly, please read Beware before continuing.
Collect only abundant species of native and nonnative plants that grow wild in your area.
Never gather all you see.
Be respectful of the animals that live there.
Always leave some of the flowers to reseed the area.
Gather respectfully with thoughts of thankfulness to God for His creation and for wellness, beauty, and His peace. Enjoy being in nature.
Be a good steward of the land you are gathering on. Pick up rubbish and trash left by others.
It is illegal to harvest in wilderness areas, such as state and national parks. Obtain permission from private landowners, never assume no one cares if you trespass. Many states have restrictions on which plants you may harvest.
Learn which plants are endangered.
Gather seeds and cuttings. Never collect all the seeds, and don't dig up the roots.
Once you've grown your own plants from wild seeds put a few plants back in the wild to restore their population.
Gathering Tools
Use gathering baskets when harvesting herbs or tightly woven muslin bags when gathering seeds as some are quite small. Make sure you have sharp scissors for cutting. Wear light colored long sleeved clothing and long pants, boots, sun hat and cotton gloves. Be sure to be prepared for any weather changes and take appropriate water and food.
